Carex Mini Exercise Pedal Bike that I returnedPedaling away on the cute little pedal exerciser for seniors that my senior mom and I like last week, I never thought twice about the fact that it was 6:30 a.m. Later in the morning, though, I discovered that the small noise it made woke my senior mom. Now, the odds are she was just about ready to wake up, but it was still enough of a noise that in the future, I won't do it right over her when she's sleeping.

All of that made me think about apartment living, which we were doing a couple of years ago. If I was on the upper floor, and wanted to use one of these pedal exercisers, I would definitely make sure I wasn't doing it over a neighbor's bedroom between 9 pm and 9 am, just to play it safe. Unless, of course, I knew the neighbor and could actually have them do a "sound check" for me. I'm guessing that there is a lot more insulation between apartment floors than house floors, but I never want to do anything that would cause friction with my neighbors. As a past neighborhood watch block captain, I know how vital good relationships are between neighbors and even something as minor as this can grow into a major friction if not treated with the Golden Rule.

Speaking of neighbors and senior parents, do you know your senior parents neighbors? Or if you live long distance, do you have contact phone numbers and addresses for them? This can be an invaluable help to them and to you in the event of any kind of family emergency there or at your home.

My long-distance senior mom is blessed with great neighbors and nearby relatives and having them AND having that info has paid off in dividends on more than once occasion.

Isn't it amazing how your mind can work when you think of one thing – like my mini exercise bike – which leads to thoughts of good neighbors which leads to thoughts of senior safety. Then again, when you are one of the Sandwich Generation dealing with the issues of caring for elderly parents and their real estate needs, I guess that's par for the course. 🙂

P.S. Excuse a little blog housekeeping – I need to add this for Technorati  🙂 2Y6V4P5KMUEV
